Hello – it’s been a while, hasn’t it? I’ve been concentrating on taking it easy and looking after myself, working, furniture shopping and … moving into my flat!
Buying a flat, aged 28, sometimes feels a strange thing. On the one hand, it’s a massive achievement. I’m amazed I actually own these walls. But on the other hand, some of your peers are buying 3 bedroom houses with actual gardens. Gardens! Can you imagine? Maybe you can, maybe you have a garden.
For a split second, it did make my pride wobble. Until I remembered those buying houses are twosomes and I’m a onesome (financially, at least). Mine is a sole achievement. I did it alone. And no break-up or divorce could threaten my ownership. (No shade on any couples, I hope you enjoy your garden.)
I do need to acknowledge my privilege, though. I lived at home for most of my twenties and paid less rent than if I’d been out there renting alone. From my friends who rent (and common sense), I know it takes much longer and requires much more rigorous saving to get your deposit sorted.
That being said, I’m still giving myself Elle Woods-style snaps for buying and furnishing a place while going through the dark depths of chronic illness. And during a pandemic.
Given I battled to stay sane and well each day, I think I did a pretty good job of decorating. It could have easily resembled a gothic dungeon or the inner-workings of a modern art composition. Bobby Burke may even be proud. (Admittedly, a couple of months of being bed and sofa bound allowed me to spend a humongous amount of time on Pinterest. That helped.)
Thanks Bobbers.
So, that’s what I’ve been doing lately. No room is quite finished yet but I will be showing you the flat very soon! I’m really excited to share everything with you.
In the meantime, here’s my interiors Pinterest board:
